Maybe max (what i would think logically and from past experiences and by being a boy myself) is trying to get info from you and tell James. From what you stated it seems a lot that James is interested in you. You should tell max only a little bit of how you feel and see signs if anyone else became aware of what you said (including James). If you feel and are sure that James is interested in you, confront him and tell him a little bit about how you feel. I think you should not let max know much about this because who knows if he is wants information from you for his benefit or just to gossip.
