Why cant republicans accept the fact over 80% of Americans want the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% to end?

All polls show the majority of Americans are against furthering the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2%. Yet Republicans are ignoring the people which is the total opposite of what they promised to do, and that was to listen to the people.
